Hudson NY History – Story of Growth and Prosperity

Hudson is a beautiful city located near the borders of Columbia County in New York. It is a historic city for a reason and that is what we are going to look at with this post. This is the city located on the east side of the Hudson river and is 120 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The city I named after the river and the river is named after its explorer Henry Hudson. It is the second-largest county with a population more than around 7000 for the total city area of 2.3 square miles.

Hudson had been occupied by several colonists and invaders for several decades and centuries. The Mahicans had initially occupied this territory for hundreds of years before the Europeans invaded. Then these Europeans occupied the territory for hundreds of years after which came the Dutch colonists. New occupancies brought in newer things around the city. There are several historical monuments and places built by these invaders and colonists.

After the English took over the new Netherlands area, Hudson became the head of navigation through the Hudson river. And, due to this, Hudson became an important port and an important city. So, they developed this place and named the city as Hudson in 1785. Post-independence too, Hudson grew in folds because of its port and was then named as the capital of New York city by the state of legislation.

The growth of the Hudson city started from 1785 when the port was developed and slowly by 1790, it became the 24th largest city in the United States and 4th largest in New York. During the 19th century, a lot of industrial development took place at Hudson and it develop to the level that it was known as the factory town. With industrial developments, it attracted migrants and had reached at the peak with around 12000 residents in the year 1895.

Then in 1935, the United states issued the Hudson half Dollar coins to celebrate the success of the developing city. It was the most minted coin in the United States ever. But as they say, development has a saturation point post which there can be a decline. With the high amount of growth, the city of Hudson became notorious in late 19th century and start of 20th century. It became a hub for gambling and prostitution and when it all broke out; the city saw a lot of decline.

The city saw a substantial decline since the year 1960s as people started losing jobs and the shifts of industrial plants to other cities. Then the immigrants shifted back to their hometown and the other industrial cities and the city population dropped to a few thousands. After this, the Hudson city has become a tourist spot that has several tourist attractions around the city. Hudson is super famous for the river, museum, antiques and a number of other historical and tourist places.

Conclusion

There are so many cities around the world that just decline and are unable to revive themselves. But when it comes to Hudson, it has seen its peak as an industrial city and then it declined. After which it got back and developed its economy through tourism.
